Igor Olenicoff was born in Iran, where his tzarist-connected parents had moved to escape the Soviet Revolution. He moved to the U.S. at age 15 and eventually built up a substantial real estate empire. His Olen Properties owns more than 8 million square feet of office space and over 17,000 residential units in California and seven other U.S. states. Olenicoff's daughter and heir-apparent, Natalia Ostensen, assists in running the day-to-day operations. In 2007, Olenicoff pleaded guilty to lying on his tax return about keeping $200 million in offshore accounts, and agreed to pay $52 million in back taxes and fraud penalties.
